This was my first exposure to the Inspector Charlie Woodend series, and I was pleased to find that there are a lot more titles available. I found it to be an Ed McBain 87th Precinct tale set in England in the 70s.The story is dark, involving the kidnapping and murder of children. The police investigating the case are understandably edgy and anxious to halt any further killings. The plot twists are unexpected and refreshing.
It is well written with several engaging characters, just the kind of thing that works well for a series. I will certainly check out more of Sally Spencer's works.

Another good DCI Wooden book. Why I'd never heard of Sally Spencer before is beyond me. Perhaps it is because they are British mysteries. By the way, Sally Spencer is written by a man. That makes it better for me. Sometimes mysteries written by a woman seem to lack a certain something that makes the book come alive. Many of them can be read for free with Unlimited & I have liked them well enough to actually buy some & plan to buy more!
