I search for books written like this. Now I plan to read all of Cooper's books. I have to read it with a dictionary and am pleased to be learning all kinds of new words. Cooper can really craft a scene and make you feel like you are right there. But the book that was sent to me doesn't have this cover. Mine just has a buffalo on it. J. F. Cooper is one of my favorite authors. I felt like rating this lower because it is so hard to read. There may be copies out there that are more modern and easier to read. I had a copy of the Last of the Mohicans that seemed easier to read. It is my favorite story. A higher educated person may not have had the problem with this book like I had. But I'm sure some of my friends would have been lost at times in the story. The story kept you wondering what was going to happen next. Really and enjoyable story. Suggest the Pathfinder.
Another great novel from J. F. C. However, should one not be a sailing enthusiast, some parts when dealing with the technology and ships of the early 19th Century, may be more difficult to understand. But don't be put off by that, the story is great and Fennimore Cooper's very correct English and his play with French and Italian a delight.
