I found, in Eight Arms to Hold You, a little gem, albeit one that could benefit from some polishing. Nevertheless, it is, in my opinion, well worth its modest cost.The author presents nine alternative histories for the Fab Four. He does so by basing each of the book’s nine stories on an actual event, a quotation or – in the case of “Paul is Dead” – a rumor that sprang up around the Beatles phenomenon. Except for the latter story – which the author admits is “just plain silly fun” – each is the product of an earnest effort to create “an accurate but adventurous” story. In my opinion, he has succeeded in doing so, providing the reader with a unique set of Beatle-related “what if” scenarios.
I should note two caveats for prospective readers. First, some may find the strong language and violence in some stories to be offensive. Second, those who have intense editorial impulses will probably have to put those impulses aside in order to thoroughly enjoy these stories.
Eight Arms to Hold You bears the imprint of an incredibly fertile imagination. Even more winningly, it is permeated by the author’s joy in the imaginative-creative process. I sincerely hope that John Poole continues to further develop his considerable talent and to share it with us through other such works.
